Being Odia, I have a particular fondness for Odisha’s silver heritage. Cuttack’s Tarakashi (silver filigree) is one of Odisha’s most celebrated crafts, known for the painstaking work of shaping and joining fine silver.

This handmade articulated fish is a lovely example of that tradition. Made from multiple little sections joined together, the fish has a wonderful little movement to it. Since this one is a smaller fish — about 8 cms — only the bottom part is articulated. From what I’ve seen, the larger the fish, the more movement and flexibility it has.

Interestingly, articulated silver fish are not unique to India either. Similar forms have been made in parts of Europe, making this a rather charming example of a craft idea that has travelled across cultures.

The necklace is available in 925 sterling silver or 925 sterling silver with gold plating, both paired with a 28-inch 925 silver rope chain.
