Charulata

Calcutta is home to stunning but now neglected heritage homes and buildings that feature beautiful cast iron patios, balconies and crests. The necklaces in Charulata draw inspiration from these works of art and endeavour to give days of yore a modern re-telling.  

Charulata's literal meaning is 'beautiful vine'. It is also my favourite Satyajit Ray film, titled so. This collection alludes to both, Satyajit Ray's movie which is a portraiture of loneliness and womanhood, and to its literal meaning (beautiful creeper) - a recurrent design in cast iron railings of yesteryears. 

 I hope Charulata captures your imagination as much as it did mine !
